Who We Are

Picture of Bill CarlsonHello, I’m Bill Carlson.  You and I can learn about computers together here at Computer Haven because I still consider myself rather new to the world of computing, not having purchased my first pc until 1999.

I graduated from Penn State University in 1975 where I majored in Philosophy.  Several years later I started working at the State Library of Pennsylvania where I have now worked for over 25 years, and where I met my lovely wife, Karen.

The library started to introduce its employees to computers in the mid 1980’s and I found myself immediately attracted by their "calling” and longed for a pc of my own. But it wasn’t until 1999 that I was finally able to obtain my first pc, a Dell 450 Pentium 3.  Much to my wife’s chagrin, I was immediately hooked and hogging all the time on this new toy.  Upon purchasing this first computer something happened that I had not anticipated: I became fascinated by the world of computer security and the need to protect ourselves from the “baddies,” as I often refer to them, and I soon found myself as the “go to" person at the library if a computer, either at work or home, had become infected by Adware or Spyware.

Last year I purchased my second and current pc, a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 from a small but high quality outfit named Tastycomputers, and also made the jump to broadband.  Feeling sorry for my wife, who found herself constantly unable to use the occupied pc, I also purchased for her a Dell 2.8 GHz Pentium 4.

But my number one and two loves in life remain my wife and hiking (in that order); computers are a distant third.  My wife and I recently purchased 2+ acres of land on an island that we consider “paradise,” Mount Desert Island, Maine, where we plan to retire to in about five years (hopefully by then they will have Broadband).  I hope that we can enjoy learning about these pc thingies together and I would like to thank you all for letting me have a chance to serve you here at Computer Haven.  Enjoy life and your stay here at CH.
