I notice that my antivirus usually updates during or at the end of boot up.
Maybe other things are updating, too.
And about anytime thereafter one thing or another may pop up and announce
that an update is available.
So I'm wondering that when I'm making a backup image if it would be best to
disconnect the cable modem or router.

Sigh... there are actually many ways to answer this.

1) Do nothing if an update popup happens during an image backup. This is what I'd probably do.

2) Do as you suggested and disconnect A cable. If the system is wireless disconnect the cable from the modem to the router. If the system is wired disconnect the cable from the router that goes to the system.

3) Forget about cables and just go to Device Manager then the properties for your network card and choose to disable. Of course, in this scenario, you would have to go back to properties and enable the device after the image back or restore. Still it would probably be easier than messing with cables.

I AM curious as to what kind of updates you are being offered. If you are talking about Windows Updates and/or Adobe Flash ( I don't recommend having Adobe PDF Reader ) this could potentially be an issue if either or both are set to auto update. However, if set to auto update I don't think that you would get a notification, it would just happen. I can't say that for absolute fact as I have not used auto updates for anything except security in longer than I can remember. I always use just notify.

Now... in Windows 10 I could see a real issue here as a lot of times you do not even know that an update is going on until after the fact. Still I doubt that a real issue is involved as the image should be verified and if the source and destination do not match the write should automatically happen again. This should be the case with any imaging software as the drive changes all the time. You can watch the drive busy light and it will flash quite often even if you are doing nothing.

Depends on the imaging program. I use two mainly Macrium Home v6 and Acronis 2016.

Acronis isn't an issue as I only image offline booting from the Recovery Environment. And my experience from using and abusing Macrium, is that it doesn't matter what the system is doing. The image will be taken and restore will be successful. Worse that can happen is update will need to be repeated from restoring the image. With Macrium I've even discovered windows date doing it's thing will imaging. Didn't effect the image.

With any other imaging I don't know.

It's something I've not even thought about but I've never disconnected during the making of an image.

On my Windows 7 desktop I have an external drive permanently attached and Acronis is set to do a full image every Friday teatime, that machine is connected via Ethernet to the router.

On this Asus Notebook using Windows 10 I use Macrium and do a manual full image usually once a week to a portable external hard drive while connected via wireless to the router. Also do the File History back up to another external drive, everything is verified and I've never had problems.

I always keep it simple and do nothing. The worse that can happen, like Peter said, if you need to restore that image, it will simply update again.

I've been using Macrium Reflect for 6 years and have never had any problems with
making, verifying or re-imaging.
I been using Nod 32 for 10 years and it's always updated only during start up.
All other programs can't update without my permission...just notify.
Just a thought about being off line when making an image.
Thanks.

Not necessary to disconnect. Obviously you don't want to reboot your machine due to an update in the middle of an image, but images are made using the Volume Shadow Copy service. Volume Shadow Copy is a copy of your volume (partition or drive) at a moment in time. It doesn't begin an image and then make changes as the system changes during the image. It takes a snapshot and then writes that snapshot to disc.

That said, I will surf the internet while imaging, but I generally don't use programs heavily or do any installations. This is out of an abundance of caution. ;)
