Long distance has always been good for me I think it was when I was doing the cross stitch that close vision came into play and I needed them so it didn't just end up out of focus. I don't do any cross stitch now as I can't hold the needle without my fingers going into cramp.

This time around I just got far glasses. Last year I got progressive bifocals and could not stand the things.

Have any of you ever tried what is called mono-vision contacts? I wore glasses up until 1985 then switched to contacts. Loved the contacts but as I got older the problem with reading fine printed crept in. Then I tried the bi-focal contacts. Like everyone else I HATED THEM, made the whole world look like I was doing drugs or something.
A woman that I worked with was using mono-vision contacts for that fine print problem and loved them. I then tried them myself and also loved them. Used them for years until my eyes got even worst. Still use them for hiking and helping GG to find subjects to photograph, they do offer superior distant vision, plus I do not have to fuss with glasses when using my binoculars. But when at home I now wear glasses again because they are once again best for reading computer screens: contacts for hiking, glasses for home.
What are mono-vision contacts? Everyone has a dominant eye, like being right-handed or left-handed. There is a simple test to find out which eye is dominant. They prescribe a contact for distance with that eye. Then the lesser eye receives a prescription for reading. Takes a few weeks to get used to but, gosh darn, does it ever work. Your brain learns to adjust and then can instantly focus on whatever you are looking at.

I've never worn contacts, but when I had LASIK surgery in 2003 (I think), I had my eyes corrected to mono vision - one eye for medium distance and one for full distance. I found that going one eye close and one eye far distance was too much difference between the two.

You never know where a thread will lead. From Baseball to bifocals. I like it. The day I put on my first pair of bifocals was interesting. Going down a set of darkened basement stairs was a trip. ( Almost literally )

Patty, I cannot believe that you had LASIK for mono vision without first trying mono vision contacts to see if you liked mono-vision. What happened after that, was it fixed? I would NEVER allow a laser to touch my eyes unless I knew in advance what I would be seeing afterwards. Bi-Focals, I love the progressive but I must admit I never tried the old kind, perhaps I would like them even more. Eventually, as I got older, I had to stop with the correction to my "reading fine print" eye for the contacts. It really did get to be too much difference. So I went back to the original mono-vision prescription and now carry a pair of weak reading glasses whenever I hike just in case I need to read some REALLY fine print. Contacts are still superior for distance even with mono-vision, glasses for fine print and computers ... ain't getting old fun ... Acadia

Geez, Acadia. How self-righteous of you! I can't wear contacts. And I had coke-bottle thick glasses and was legally blind in both eyes without them. I had 3 pairs of glasses I had to use and could never find (in time) the ones I needed - like if there was a cat-fight outside and I needed my distance glasses.
After LASIK I didn't need any glasses at all for about 5 years, and when I had to start wearing the again, the prescriptions haven't been very strong - so very thin lenses. Had I not liked, or couldn't adjust to mono vision, they would have redone the LASIK to full distance vision for both eyes. Just like they did for the one eye that had close-up vision, which they pushed out to medium. Having LASIK totally changed my life for the better.

First there was this: Patty, I cannot believe that you had LASIK for mono vision without first trying mono vision contacts to see if you liked mono-vision.
And then this: I would NEVER allow a laser to touch my eyes unless I knew in advance what I would be seeing afterwards.
Make more sense now?

Hey, let's all kiss and make up. I think the last few posts are about how things were phrased, not what was intended. It is very easy to post something in all innocence and have it taken out of context due to the simple mistake of one word or phrase. I seem to somewhat remember this happening to me in relation to phones...

Well even before Jay's post, I'd decided to smooth this over. Acadia, perhaps I was being overly sensitive - that is simply how what you said struck me. I'm not mad at you, wasn't at any point. I do think that we all need to think a bit more about how what we say may impact the person we're saying it to. Agreed? I've found that sometimes someone is having a bad day, sometimes a really bad day - and you don't know what will get set off. That said, I know you are absolutely not a self-righteous person! Possibly because of that, I was rather taken aback by what you said. By the end of your post though, I knew that you were trying to be helpful, and I should have said so. Well, I knew I should have said so. I was just being P.O.ed. My apologies. Still buds?
