In Win 7, Defender is only anti-malware.
In Win 7 Pro, is it also an anti-virus?
I've already installed Eset Nod 32...do I have a problem?

I suspect not. When I install EIS, it turns off Windows Defender. I wouldn't be surprised it Eset did the same thing. You might check it in the control panel. If it's not off I'd turn it off, as it isn't a good idea to have two AV's running at the same time.

Windows Defender was initially anti-virus. It added spyware/malware later.

I have to question this... remember that the question was asked in relation to Windows 7.

In Windows 7 Defender was strictly anti-malware. It was Security Essentials that was anti virus... well still is in Win 7.

The swapping of names done by MS did cause some confusion. Let's see if I can remember the sequence right.

1) With Vista MS wanted to include an anti virus package within Windows. They lost an anti trust case and made it just malware named Defender.

2) MS came out with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and, if installed, Defender would be turned off as it was included in MSE.

3) Then came Windows 8 and, apparently, MS got around the anti trust issues and was allowed to include an OS based anti virus. Sadly they named it Defender causing confusion as to which was which.

Windows Defender was actually the successor to the Microsoft Antispyware program available for Windows XP and it was strictly antispyware when included with Vista and Windows 7. You had the option to download and install Microsoft Security Essentials on XP/Vista/7, which then disabled Defender as MSE handles both antivirus and antispyware. In Windows 8, Defender was actually more like MSE than Defender on prior versions of Windows. It is both antispyware and full antivirus. When a 3rd party antivirus program is installed and registers itself as the provider for virus and spyware protection, Defender is disabled. If the 3rd party antivirus is installed that is not compatible with that version of Windows or is somehow improperly installed in that it doesn't register itself to Windows as the provider, Defender remains enabled and can cause problems. The solution for that situation is to remove the 3rd party product and install a compatible version or simply reinstall, assuming that you aren't trying to install onto a badly infected machine...

Steve, mayhaps in different terms, I think that we are in total agreement. :)

Yes, ok. I was thinking of Security Essentials and forward.

THAT is putting it mildly.

Sigh, I can and cannot agree. If one were to do a simple search the differences are easily seen.

Here is the point, Acadia. For the normal novice user Windows built in security is just fine. For those users that the built security does not cover... quit using torrents, and FaceBook. The last I read FaceBook infects more systems than torrents by a long shot.

As always the biggest security issue is the organic unit sitting in the chair that faces the keyboard...

Microsoft has not made it easy in their naming conventions of their security products. :-D

Heh, I always heard it put this way:
The weakest link in your pc's security chain is the piece of fleshware that sits between the chair and the keyboard.
