Is anyone really good at photo editing and willing to do a 'charity' job?

A co-worker's dad died quite a ways back and the first image is all she has but really wants something better. She is also a good friend or I would not even ask here. I've done the best I can but it could probably be done better. The second image is what I was able to do. The problem is that the original picture is very small, not a lot larger than a wallet sized pic. Obviously it is also VERY grainy. Shoot, the initial scan only gave me an image of 700x984 pixels, sigh, not really a lot to start with.

There are a couple of intermediate images but here is about the best that I can do by myself. If anyone is really good at this stuff and would like to help I can send all 4 images. This is the best that I can do...

I agree with Manny, you did a good job Jay. Did you do the scan route to achieve it ?

I scanned the initial image then did a lot of noise reduction in PSP Pro. Then I printed and scanned that print and repeated the process adding some softening. Then I again printed and scanned. Converted to Sepia and again with the noise removal and softening finally converting back to black and white.

Why the repeated print/scan? Editing software will only go so far as to noise removal (the graininess). Printing and re-scanning gives a new base point for the noise removal to work with. Why the conversion to Sepia? Noise will be detected differently in Sepia than B&W from what I understand. Basically I just tried stuff as I've never done something like this before... Thank goodness for the 'undo' option.

I think that I may try one more set of steps although she is thrilled with the results that I emailed. Now that I've gotten rid of most of the noise I'm curious what would happen if I sharpened the image then ran noise reduction again. Then softening again and repeated with less and less softening. Might be worth a try. LOL! At least it would give me something to do during commercials in the NFL Playoffs. ;)

And thanks Joan and Manny on the compliments but I really feel that the image can be better. If anyone remembers an old member named SherA; I could send the initial scan to her and she would probably return an image that looked like it had just been taken with a hi-res camera. Haven't communicated with her in years so would not even consider asking but, last I heard, she was rated in the top 100 world wide in Photoshop. In fact she was instrumental in the creation of the header image on my photo gallery. The white on the left is actually transparent and appears as black on the site. OK, so it seems that doing a gradual transparency is not all that hard in Photoshop but I look at the 'fine points'. The first 'fine point' is the simple fact that the blue/white gradient text was already there but is not affected by what she did. The second fine point is where it says "Journey to the center of your web". This was initially a Microsoft flag. The following image shows a bit of what she did but not the final result. Take a peek at http://www.photogallery2.jaylach.com . LOL! Now I challenge you to find a flaw where she got rid of the MS flag and extended the ribbon through the circle. The woman is just at a different level of existence when it comes to image manipulation!

I would try just sharpening first and see how that is, without noise reduction again I mean. Then you might want to do some "spot" removal around that under chin area. That really looks like it was mostly photo graininess, but now it looks a bit like a rash. Same with over the lip and under the one eye.

Just sharpening does not work as I already tried. By the time I sharpen enough to give more detail to the outline the noise/graininess is back. I just don't think that I'm going to get a better result on my own. I guess that it is OK as my friend is already thrilled at the current result. :)

Jay: If you like what has been done in the past fifteen minutes let me know and I'll finish it up. The eyes, glasses and hair are going to be the fussiest part of the process, so it may take a while.

Ron, if you are willing to make the thing better I'd love to see what you can do. Personally I think that I've reached my limit. ;) Please do not do this unless you want as my friend is already thrilled with what I was able to do. I DO think the result could be better than mine.

Thanks but don't do it unless you are actually interested in the project. Like I said the lady is already happy it is just that I'm not... ;)

I remember her Jay. I think you did more than I was thinking when I said the scan process. It was something I'd heard about years ago.
You scanned in the original then resized it up, scanned again at the new size resized etc. you get the idea. You'd do this till you got the size you wanted, I think it was in connection with turning a photo into a poster. I don't know whether the same principle would work then do all the cleaning up when you got to the size you wanted.

I do that all the time at work for customers Joan. Unfortunately it will not work in this case as the original image is grainy. To do the scan/resize bit you need the initial image to be clear.

Thanks. I'll fix the window pane Tuesday (on the road tomorrow) and send it to you.

Ron, I was able to print your image at a paper size of 8x8 inches and it is totally awesome. Initially I thought that what I did was decent but your solution totally blows mine out of the water! I would LOVE to know the software used along with the process. What you did is so good that, possibly, with Patty's permission, it could be added to the forums as a tutorial if you could give step by step instructions.

Just kidding but I now need your address as the lady that will get the print will want to show up to give you a BIG hug! :)

Absolutely amazing, DRam! I, too, would love to know what program you used and what function.

I agree with Patty and Jay Ron, that is a brilliant job you did there. I'm not into photo editing I don't take enough photos these days anyway.

I've got the CDs and books in connection with Photoshop 7 the 10 Anniversary along with the Animation Book but never really did anything with it and I've not had it installed on a computer for quite awhile now.

For saying it's just a hobby to you you're very good. :-)

Aw shucks, it weren't all that much. But thanks for the kind words.

The program used was Photoshop Elements 8. Tools used were: Flter>smart blur, then Clone tool> fuzzy brushes and sharp brushes, and finally: Enhance>adjust lighting>brightness and contrast. During the process the image was enlarged between 200% and 400% depending on the area being worked on.

And now out to shovel the walks, then pack and hit the road.

I was out and about today so stopped in at work and dropped off the 8x8 inch print. The lady was totally thrilled. Thanks again Ron. :)

That being the case I won't bother with the missed window pane.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.
