I'm shopping for a laptop for my granddaughter and looking at those with AMD processors vice Intel. The latters are more expensive, of course, but is there significant advantage for paying that price differential to get Intel? My wife had an AMD computer a few years ago and it gave excellent service. Any opinions?

Keep in mind that the following is quite biased as I've been using mostly AMD most of my computing life.

Personally I think that Intel is over rated and I use mostly AMD. That does not mean that Intel is bad. I just believe that you get more bang for the buck with AMD.

For instance an Intel I7 cannot match my AMD 8 core 16 thread CPU yet the I7 costs almost twice as much.

Some will say that Intel will run cooler and tend to last longer. Back in the days when a 500 MHz. CPU was fast that was true. It no longer is. I run AMD in both my desktop systems and they both run cooler than the I5 Intel in my laptop. Of course a laptop is going to normally run hotter than a desktop but both AMD CPUs are stronger and faster than the I5 so that offsets that a bit. Also I do not use standard CPU coolers in my desktops. Still my point is that the higher heat issue with AMD ended years ago.

What jay said. :-)
AMD processors do run "hotter" -- but you'll never notice.
They are reliable and are generally cheaper than comparable Intel processors.
