I purchased this laptop roughly 5-6 months ago and find it very
uncomfortable to use due to my disability. It has a 1tb drive, 4gb memory
and win 7. I want to sell it leaving win7 intact. Hows the best way to
accomplish this and remove my personal info if at all possible. Jim :?:

It most likely came with a recovery disc that you can use to reset it to Factory defaults. If you don't have the disc, look in the programs menu for any programs that might create the disc for you. The last Asus I worked on came with a disc but also a recovery program so that you could burn a new recovery disc. There also may be a boot option (press a F key) that does a factory reset for you.

Thanks David. My only question is will it revert to "out of box" condition. Jim

Most recovery procedures set it back to as it came out of the box. HOWEVER, if you are concerned that there may be some personal bits left over on the disk that could be recovered the answer is most likely yes (if the person had the right programs to recover lost data), if you are concerned about that, use a program that writes all zerors to the drive first, then do the recovery. Pay CLOSE attention to what you are wiping out as you DON'T want to overwrite any recovery partitons as you need these to reset the laptop.

Just curious... what makes it uncomfortable? Is it your first laptop and you find they are just not for you or is it something specific about the Asus? Not asking you to go into the details of your disability, just curious if it is something specific to this laptop.

I'm just curious as I bought an Asus around the same time as you and am very happy with it..

Hi Jay: There is nothing wrong with the laptop. In fact I think its very well constructed
and with the 2 year warranty its great.
Yes this is my first laptop and it is most uncomfortable to use, as I have to hunch over
it in order to use it. My problem is, shadow vision in my right eye, "0" hearing in my right
ear and limited movement in my right leg and arm courtesy of North Korea. I find that
using my desktop and 21" hd monitor I can slouch back in my hi back desk chair and
be most comfortable. I thought a laptop would be quite versatile and it probably is for
most people. Unfortunately, not me. Jim

Jim, I don't know if you'd be into this or not, but a lot of folks with laptops use them like desktops. You can attach your monitor (or a monitor, if yours doesn't have matching ports with the laptop) to the back of the laptop. You can get a wireless (USB or Bluetooth if your laptop has it) keyboard and mouse. You connect those via a USB receiver, or built-in receiver in the case of bluetooth, then you can just put your laptp aside, I think you can even close the lid, and operate off of the monitor, keyboard and mouse. That gives you the option to disconnect from all this and still take your laptop with you if you want to go mobile somewhere.

I understand Jim.

To followup on what Patty said if the graphics are Intel there is a good chance that the system has WiDi which is wireless HDMI. It allows the connection of a monitor or HDTV with an HDMI input to be connected without any wires.

Patty, Jay: I appreciate your suggestions, but I think that
in my case it would probably be more trouble than its worth.
As a matter of fact my desktop is brand new, as is most of
the perifherals (Im sure thats spelled wrong). I will however
explore the options you both gave me and post back on what
I decide to do. Many thanks for all your help. Jim

If the desktop system is new and has more power than the laptop you are probably better off selling if you are not going to use.

If you are not able to get the money from the laptop that you think that you should you could always connect it to your TV and use it as an entertainment system. ;)

On the ASUS laptop it has recovery on f9 on boot up. However
it gives me 3 options about which Im confused (as usual).
Option 1- Recover to first partion only
Option 2- Recover windows to entire hd
Option 3- Recover windows to entire hd with two partions
"C" (40%) and "D" (60%)
which one would I use since Im selling the laptop. Thanks Jim

Take a look at Disk Management and see how the drive is now set up. If Drive Management only shows one partition use option 2. If it shows 2 partitions it is your choice as to option 1 or 3. Personally, as long as I was fully backed up, I'd use option 2 and let the final owner shrink the OS partition to create a data partition to fit their size needs.

I would only use two partitions if one was a recovery partition. 40/60 is way out of kilter for a system drive - well, depending on the size of the hard drive anyway. People are not used to using data partitions, Jay. It generally confuses them, and they wind up putting everything on C, then wondering why they are running out of space. You have a power user viewpoint - but we are in the great minority.

Patty-Jay: Thanks for the responses. It is a 640gb hdd. I just want to do the easiest so I can sell it.
However, I dont want to screw it up, as I've never done a recovery. Jim

That is why I said that I'd use option 2 using the entire drive for the system partition. I may have stated badly about then letting the final user shrink the partition. I should have probably added that they could do so if they choose.

Even though I don't really care for doing a recovery, as I prefer to use a disk image, they DO have their place as in your case. Try option 2 first and if you don't like it just do the recovery again using a different option. ;)

OS (C) 194gb free of 238gb, and Data (D) 332gb free of 332gb. Jim

I assume then that you used the two partition option, option 3. I probably would have used option 2 which reads as though it will use the entire drive for the system partition with no second data partition.

The main point is that you seem to have back a 'factory' system with your installed programs and data gone. I would still look at D: with Windows Explorer to make sure that it is really empty. If not you could always just format d:.

No problem. Sometimes I'm not clear enough in what I type and you keep me on my toes. ;)

@ Jim. Yes, I would use option 2.
