Have a question about the program of Microsoft Security Essentials for one of my laptop which is Toshiba Satellite A210 PSAFGC-MS908C which is AMD Turion 64 x2 and the operating system is Microsoft Vista. Now when I see the site of Microsoft Security Essentials and not sure which one to click for download? There are two downloads to choose with one -- enus\amd64\mseinstall.exe and other is enus\x86\mseinstall.exe. Can you tell me which is the right file to download and install it in my laptop.
Thank you,
John

You want to download the amd64 for 64 bit *if* you are running the 64 bit version of Vista. Right click on Computer from the Start Menu and select properties. That will tell you f you are using a 32 bit (x86) or 64 bit version of Windows. Be sure to review this checklist/FAQ: http://experts.windows.com/w/experts_wiki/89.aspx-steve

Sorry that I did not get back to reply sooner. Anyway want to say thanks to Stephen about right-click on Computer and show me the properties that I have 32-bit Operating System of Windows Vista. So that mean I download the file with enus\x86\mseinstall.exe from the site of Microsoft Downloads. Is that correct?
Thank you again,
John

Actually, you shouldn't be having to chose anything. It should be automatically detected - all you have to do is click download. Go to this link: www.microsoft.com/securityessentials.

Yes, download the x86 version. As Patty noted, the official download page will automatically detect your OS -- if you access it in Internet Explorer. In some other browsers, you need to make the language/OS version selection yourself. And please do review that checklist I provided a link to in my last post. Following it will insure a successful experience. -steve

And make SURE to uninstall any other anti virus software that you may have before installing Security Essentials.

Nice checklist, Steve - but gosh, it sure makes a simple operation complicated! All I have ever done on the many dozens of installs I've done on folks machines is uninstall the prior AV program. I've never had a failed install or even a hiccup. I'm not saying the checklist is a bad idea. Honestly though, I prefer to just do the simple and resort to the more complex if an issue arises. That's just me. [Gosh, I feel like I'm sounding cranky today - is that just getting old? ]

LOL! Yes, we are getting old. And that check list is extensive, but if the average person abandons after the first few sentences, they've still gotten the gist of what needs to be done before they install. The number of failures we see due to people not removing conflicting antivirus software (full and trial versions) or not having updated Windows via Windows Update...many. -steve

I know, Steve. That's the difference between working the forums and working the field. Folks don't go to the forums to report that they had a super easy install with no issues. <g> Since you see all the problems, let me assure you that the greatest (huge!) majority of users of Microsoft Security Essentials have no issues.

I am totally in agreement with you, Patty. The vast majority of users have no issues at all with MSE. Those that do, however, would have avoided issues had they reviewed the FAQ. I think you make a good point in that I may want to have a short checklist/FAQ and also the longer, more detailed FAQ. -steve
