Somebody wrote me from the Philippines, and searching lead to me believe it's the reason for my issue, but I don't understand the solutions.
All of a sudden, my Comic Sans 9 types in bold. New mail, reply, and signature, although it looks normal after I send the message. The only way to make it look normal when I create, is to reduce the font to 8. I don't have time to change the font on each letter and I shouldn't have to.
Online suggested changing to Unicode (UTF-8). Western Euro is the default, but when I changed it to UTF-8, it looks exactly the same. It also looks like a HTML setting thing, but I didn't touch any settings.
I can't figure out how it could override my settings and how to get it back to normal.
Thank you.

Stephen,
I followed those instructions yesterday. Each of the three "sample" boxes shows my signature as I created it, which is regular (not bold).
Thank you.

I found a solution, but don't like the answer.
The zoom function was set at 105%. Lowering it fixed everything, including Calendar.
