Win 7 error: warning 1909 could not create shortcut HP Solution Center link.
Verify that the destination folder exists and that you can access it.

I can't print from computer, but the printer is working, so I uninstalled and reinstalled Printer software and Solution Center today. I think, perhaps, that the SC executable file is not where it's supposed to be and that is why I am getting the error.
This is the file: HPQDIREC.EXE - shortcut that I created on desktop and Start Menu give me the error.
I right clicked from the app to create the shortcut, but it's not from today's install.
The 2010 exe file is in my Program Files - Digital Imaging bin where it's supposed to be - not 2015.

Unless it's hidden, I can't find the HPQDirect files that I installed today.
The "solution" didn't fix my printer, either. Troubleshoot can't detect the issue.

Is it possible this ties back to my files being all screwed up - in Music/Pictures & Documents? Things are being routed to weird places, still. Is this a directory problem?
(I never fixed that issue because it's bigger and more complex than I thought. Good thing, since files are still being saved in strange places.)

This is either three issues or one. Error - printer - and folder locations.
Excuse me if it is and I'll fix it.

Thank you.

Chas,

I understand the process, but the directions are not clear enough.
Which file = Program Files 86 or Program Files?

What does he mean - "extract ... to a folder you like?"
A folder I LIKE? I need to create the missing HP Solution Center folder, which may be the folder I mentioned above. What if it's not? Is the missing folder an exe file or a link?
This is too vague for me. I did the ownership thing five years ago, so I can (maybe) handle that.

These are his written instructions:
- manually create the required folder,
- download the compressed registry file (link is below),
- extract the contents to a folder you like,
- double-click the "Take Ownership_Add.reg" file to add it to the Windows Registry,
- go to the folder that you manually created, right-click on it, click "Take ownership"
- try to continue the setup, click OK, or Retry a few times.

My error doesn't sit open with the RETRY button - it tells me to make sure the folder exists.
Then I have to hope that I've created the missing folder.
If this is my best option, please help w/clearer instructions.

Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

I'm not sure I fully understand everything you said but reading between the lines I suspect the following might be of use, whilst not a common problem, other HP Printer owners with similar shortcut issues to yours have reported success ...

Is "link" a typo? I suspect it probably says "lnk"?

In which case you may have an association issue with your .lnk file extension, the .lnk file extension is the one that handles shortcuts.
[Note: It is spelt LNK, not to be confused with INK ;) ]

Fortunately, restoring the default registry entries and programme associations for this file extention is fairly simple thanks to the good folks over at sevenforums, it's just a matter of downloading a small .reg file and merging it into your registry.

The .reg file and instructions can be found in this thread:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19 ... store.html

I wouldn't expect restoring this file extension to its default settings to cause you any problems unless you've specifically altered it in the past for your own reasons.
That's said, prudence would dictate that a backup should be made before proceeding as this will make a change to your registry :)

Good luck.

Yes, Doddie, of course you are right.

What an amazingly simple fix you provided.
It will take a while for my printer to warm up, so that I can test Solution Center.
Will let you know later.

I did not alter anything intentionally - I may be having leftover problems from something else.

Thank you very much!

It remains to be seen whether I was right or not, but thanks for the vote of confidence :338:

Btw, don't forget to reboot after merging the reg file, I'm also unsure whether the changes will work without another uninstall/reinstall of the HP software but see what happens after the reg file is merged.

:gluck:

Doddie,

Unfortunately, I was overly optimistic.
I uninstalled/reinstalled again - maybe twice more tonight. Same error.

And I can't get the SOB HP to print (from computer). I reinstalled the software five to six times since yesterday - lastly from HP. Do you know if this missing folder could cause this problem?
Thinking about running a disk check.

Frustrated.
Thank you.

I forgot - I got another SolCtr installation error: Cannot open the file C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Digital Imaging\F86D9734-D358-4C5B-BC2B-6D90557FF05B}\..Help\dm_turn_off_wireless.chm.

I located F86D in program files, but do not see Help...wireless.chm.
I also get another message. It flashes, so all I remember is Gbase2 something.
Either it's not helpful or it's a clue.
Do a file check?

Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

I don't know what else to suggest other than contacting HP Support, as it's their software that won't re-install they're probably the best people to contact for a solution.

e.g. I see they have Software and Driver Removal Utilities etc but as they may be specific to driver build and/or printer type/model it's probably advisable to ask HP.

The United States HP Support page can be found here:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/

[Note: If you're not in the US, change the location using the 'Country' option near the bottom of the HP page to get support for the country you live in.]

Good luck.

I tend to call Canada, as they are far more responsive than the US system.
It installed, but hasn't made a difference.

Thank you.
