I believe some time ago, I asked about how I would avoid getting Windows 10 on this old computer.

I do remember getting advice on how to stop automatic updates downloading. So now I have "80 important updates" that I have not downloaded. I also have 6 "optional" ones.

I am wondering if someone can tell me if these updates are really important and if so, how I can tell which ones I should be updating? And how can I avoid getting Windows 10 automatically!

I don't want Windows 10 - and this whole operation of stopping automatic updates was to avoid this?

I am hoping someone can help - please!

Since the deadline for getting the free upgrade has 'officially' passed you should not have any problem. I say 'officially' as it is still available just not through Windows Updates.

Still it is always best to be safe so I recommend that in download and install Never10. It will prevent any OS upgrade and will also remove any Windows 10 setup files if already downloaded.

After running Never10 and disabling the ability to upgrade the OS go ahead and change Windows Updates back to your preferred settings.

As far as other updates are concerned, yes, they are important. It would be foolish not to keep up with them, as they most often concern the security of your machine.

Thank you SO much. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't come here for help.

I have done as you said. I have left my computer downloading those updates. I exited everything I could exit, but it's been running for over an hour and it still says 0% downloaded. Is there any way to speed it up? Should I do it in safe mode or won't that work? I will just leave it for now and get out of Firefox as well.

You are quite welcome. :)

Download and install update KB3172605 and it will likely fix your update problem.

What I did was shut the whole thing down and restart. Then I clicked on the updates and it started immediately. So now it's all done. And I changed the settings to download updates automatically from here on in.

Thanks again.
