GG and I are on the 5-year plan, a new pc every five years. Well, that time is about up but we have a problem: we both love our old pcs too much and they show no signs of aging, yet. My question is about the expected life span of the bios battery. Anyone have any ideas on averages? I know that many hard drives will die after so many years but what about these batteries? Anyone have a battery die after 6-7 years?

An interesting question that I've never given much thought to because I've never had a BIOS battery die on me... that said, if one did expire on me i 'd just replace it rather than replace the PC or motherboard. They're very cheap.

Acadia I don't know the answer but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that there is a setting to enable you to make a copy of the settings and then restore them. You'd have to wait for the experts to get here as I'm sure they'd know the answer.

Acadia For the most part my settings are the default so that's not really an issue for me but if i did have a lot of custom settings i'd use my mobile phone to photograph every page in the BIOS so i could manually input them again should that happen.

I totally agree with Doddie as to the battery not being an issue. I like his idea of taking a photo of each BIOS screen but have never done so. Actually most CMOS batteries are very common and available at just about any place that carries batteries.
Just to make the BIOS situation clear there is actually no such thing as a BIOS battery as it is actually a CMOS battery. The BIOS is stored on non-volatile memory. This means that you could totally remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard and the BIOS would be fine but CHANGES you made from the default settings would be lost. Also your time/date settings would be off.
The bottom line is that you only need to know the changes you have made in the BIOS to restore the CMOS. You do not have to rebuild the BIOS or anything. Actually I have fixed systems in the past that would not boot by removing the CMOS battery to clear things to the defaults on the BIOS.

Like the other day when I left a loaf of bread sitting on top of my toaster oven while making garlic bread. It is going to take some more scrubbing to get the blue from the bread wrapper off the top of the oven...
