This is going to be silly and trivial but it's been bugging for weeks and I can't seem get a handle on this. A few weeks ago my router died and I replaced. The router is working great but I made a new wireless network using the same old name. Windows 7 then added a 2 after the name and I can't seem to make exactly what I want to be. Here's what it looks like. What I want to do is simply get rid of that darn 2. None of the menu items here allow me to do that. Attachment:

I'm assuming hiding somewhere is the first Strawberry Oaks connection that needs to go away, but where? Otherwise, no problems with the connection at all. It's all working but it's bugging me...

My desktop doesn't have wireless so I can't poke around to find anything - but have you tried a registry search for Strawberry Oaks 2?

I can rename it Steve but it only changes the top name - the one with wireless in it rather than the second term [called status in the detailed view]which is the one I want to modify.
The problem with searching the registry is that I get too many hits and frankly it's not quite clear what I should change. Things like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Signatures\Unmanaged\ 010103000F0000F0080400000F0000F044660FD89A74DBA38A64D377E3911BEA32C4D9ECE5F190920EF1C8EB98802566 seem likely but then I can't find the corresponding one for the one without the number.
Thanks to both of you for trying but I've already wasted more time on this than it deserves. I can live with it.
Sorry for the delay but I didn't get response notifications.

Ah! Well, I'll keep my eyes open for information on how to do this and let you know if I stumble on anything concrete. -steve

Did you call the company that provides your wireless? Sometimes they can be helpful.

No I did not Nancy. They wouldn't have anything to do with what Windows labels things. I did fix the problem, however, by having my laptop die. It no longer mattered what it did since it became an anchor.

No, but they helped me w/router settings on tablet - and efficiently, I might add.
I added _nomap to my tablet SSID to prevent location tracking and on my (new wireless) printer settings, my network choice was "?/" or something like that. Interesting, I thought.
Dying would certainly end that particular problem. Hope all is well with you, Manny.
