This may not be the proper place for my question. Don't Know. All I do know is that IE will not let me download anything. ie Java updated etc. Every time I try to download, a stupid box running the bottom length of my screen when I hit download and it says "running security scan". And it never seems to end. I didn't ask it to run a scan, consequently I never get to download. I cant figure where its coming from so I can get rid of it. Doesn't seem to be Symantic so it must be IE. I just want to be rid of it before this computer is dragged to the curb in frustration. HELP!

Are you speaking of the long rectangular bar at the bottom that also contains the buttons for Save? If so, that is part of IE, and it has always done that. If that's what it is and it is now hanging, I would run a virus scan and a Malwarebytes scan on your computer. I'd also check your add-ons to see what you've got installed and get rid of any you don't need. Are you running a Symantic security program on your machine? If so, which one?

That's exactly it. Driving me nuts. I have Symantic Internet Security which I have for over 5 years without incident, I will follow your instructions and post back later today. Thanks, Jim

Tried all your suggestions and nada! In fact it wouldn't allow me to download malwarebites, NVidia driver downloads or windows 10. I ran a complete scan with Symantic and Super anti Spyware and they didn't show anything. Don't know what to do now. Any more advice? Jim

Try going into Safe Mode with Networking and downloading Malwarebytes.

Of course Symantec didn't find any malware - it is the malware! My opinion. I would uninstall it and see if you are fixed. You can always reinstall. Before you do that, check the settings for your security programs and make sure you haven't inadvertently told them not to allow downloads in one way or another.

See this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/f ... 680?auth=1

If that doesn't solve it, check this out. But don't jump to the link below (which blames a security update/patch) right away:

I did both Patty. I'll try Stephens advice. Truthfully, Im so disgusted with this pc, I think I'll probably go with a new one with Win10 or Win8.1 If I can bump up to Win10 from 8.1. Im just a little leery that I cant swing over my favorites etc from my Win7. Thanks for all the responses.

Just export the Favorites to a USB drive and then Import them on the new system.

Under Files/Import and Export When in IE you MAY want to also include Cookies and Feeds along with Favorites; Feeds only if you use any. The inclusion of cookies in the export and import MAY alleviate some of the irritation of re-establishing such things as auto log-on.

And don't forget about 'Easy Transfer' where you run on the old machine and save all your settings and such then run on the new system and import everything saved.
