I get the Ask Leo newsletters in my email. This particular one is very interesting and offers excellent information (as usual) about taking precautions and preparedness for possible pending disaster. I'm sure members here subscribe to Ask Leo but for members that don't here is the link for valuable information. I have to say I didn't know there were subscription emails and never considered using one. Ask Leo #643 - Are Free Email Services Worth It?

Thanks Terry. Several of the points brought up are one of the reasons that I use a mail client (Outlook) instead of web based.

Jay doesn't using Outlook mail client require a web based email address? That's the Outlook contained inside the Office Program right? I haven't used that in many a year.

Yes you still need the email address but you don't get the ads nor do you lose anything from the past if your email address goes south. I have emails stored from years ago. If I were strictly web based and things went bad they would all be gone. Using a mail client means that these archives are on my local system and are still there even if I lose the address.

That's what made Windows Live Mail so popular and my choice for gathering emails. I miss that. Plus the fact that in the new People App in Windows 10 you can not create mail lists or groups of multiple contacts to bulk send an email to such as a church group or golf league. I think Microsoft really dropped the ball by not adding that feature to the People App when customers complained while using Windows 8 & 8.1.

I also liked Live Mail! I have 5 email accounts that I monitor and that just takes web based email out of the question for me. For me Outlook is overkill but I have the current Office so I might as well use the thing. You might want to take a look at Thunderbird if you want a local mail client that is pretty feature rich for free. I have not used it for a long time but it has always gotten good reviews. It is done by the same people that do Firefox. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

Outlook is only overkill if you use all its features. Just use it for email and that's all you have to deal with.

This is quite true Patty but I also find the calendar and reminder functions of value when I set up an appointment with the VA or something.
One thing that I do NOT like (and have not figured out) is that I have all my contact intact but only if I use my Hotmail account to send an email. If I use another account to send I will have no contacts show if I look. Not a big deal as I almost always use Hotmail to send but has me curious.
