I have four email accounts that I monitor. Three are through my hosting and connect through POP3. The other is through Microsoft as a Hotmail account which does Exchange (?)

I'm sorry but I'm not exactly sure how to phrase my question. It just seems odd to me that my POP3 accounts are done in a couple of seconds but the Microsoft account can take much longer than the other three combined on a send/receive request. I have seen this with three email clients including Outlook.

Is this just the nature of the beast or may I have a setting set wrong?

No, it's normal.

POP does a series of server calls:
1. Log in
2. Any new messages?
3. Retrieve message x
4. Delete message x (unless leave on server is set)
5. Log off

Exchange ActiveSync is actually synchronizing *all* folders and messages between your PC and the server each time it connects.

I solved the delay in my Hotmail account while it syncs and now my total email check is a couple of seconds.

I have a "Stored Emails" folder that has a LOT of email receipts and such things as all emails between my sister and myself along with other people. My total mail store is 599 MB. I moved this Stored Email folder from being listed in my Hotmail account to the main email account through my hosting.

Since doing this removed the backup on Microsoft's servers of all my receipts I then moved my mail store to my data drive which is synced to the data drive on my second system. I ended up with much quicker mail checks and still maintained a backup of my mail store. Since I do daily system images of my C: drive I still had a backup of my mail store but, now, just need to copy back from my second system instead of having to restore a system image. I also removed 599 MB of used space from my C: drive which is a 500 GB M.2 SSD.

That seems like a neat trick. :-P
Okay, you meant that the drive is a 500 Gig SSD, I presume. :-D

Yep, I meant 500 GB on the M.2 drive. I corrected the initial post.

It is also easier to do a redundant backup of my email store. By default the mail store is under AppData/roaming which is hidden and/or protected and not normally seen. With the mail store on my data drive it is, now, a simple matter of making a copy of the folder.
