Quite a while back I picked up a 2017 Surface 3 which I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The wireless speeds were terrible at ~12-15Mb/sec while all other wireless connections were ~50-60Mb/sec; wired connections are ~115Mb/sec. I figured that the wireless in the Surface just didn't really like Windows 11. Since it isn't used for much more than an eBook reader I wasn't much concerned.

Turns out Windows 11 was not the reason as I have gone back to Windows 10 on the Surface and the wireless is just as slow. Still not concerned but the thing must have an awful wireless adapter. Still make a good eBook reader and I got it cheap. With just using for eBook downloads the slow connection doesn't really matter although Windows Updates takes a while.

Not looking for a solution as I doubt there is one other than getting a USB wireless adapter which I'm not going to do. Just presenting a little info.

Have you checked that the wireless adapter driver is up to date? I've no experience with the Surface 3, but every one of the Surface Pro models I've used, including the current Surface Pro 7 I currently use, have performed quite well via wireless.

Yep. checking for driver updates was the first thing I did after going back to Windows 10.

It would seem, then, that the Surface 3 wireless is sub-par!
Interesting thread from 8 years back on Reddit about slow wifi on the Surface 3 and other Surface devices from that time frame -- https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/37lozh/has_anyone_found_a_fix_for_slow_wifi_on_surface_3/

Thanks for the link Steve. Seems like a conflict from what I read either due to a router protocol or Blu-tooth. My mouse for the thing is connected via Blu-tooth. I doubt that I'll mess with my router settings but will try disabling the Surface Blu-tooth to see what happens. Problem with that is that the mouse for the thing is Blu-tooth but worth checking.

looks like it's the Blu-tooth aspect. It would seem that the Blu-tooth and the wi-fi must be a shared device with Blu-tooth having priority.

With Blu-tooth enabled:
Download is currently 10.43Mb/sec.

With Blu-tooth disabled:
Download is currently 52.95 Mb/sec.

Seems to show that it is still a bad device setup but at least I now seem to know the cause. As a work around I will normally leave Blu-tooth enabled as that is the system's mouse connection but will disable for Windows Updates to quicken the download time. Since I normally just use the thing as an eBook reader this works for me.

Great catch Steve and Jay. I would like to know if it is possible that this might be the cause of my extremely slow downloads, and general slowness of my HP laptop. I can not check it at present as it will not boot.
