... another totally non-computer question from the moose.
Anyone here at the Haven familiar with septic systems? No, we are not having any problems. But was wondering about those monthly treatments like Rid-X, etc. that are supposed to keep everything "flowing" smoothly. I never realized that there were so many different brands and, of course, they all claim to be the best. Are they even really needed unless you are having problems, I've been finding differentiating opinions about even needing them at all on the Net? I do not mind throwing money away every month just to play it safe, but still, which one? Thanks a ton, Acadia

All I know about 'septic' is that it is a 'crappy' system... Sorry but I can't be any actual help.

Having dealt with a Septic system at my late parents' house and having to have it completely replaced before I could sell the house...
RidX and the like are mostly useless. You need to have the solids pumped before they breech the overflow and clog the drainage field. Get a reputable service to come periodically (how often depends on usage and conditions) to do this. Use a simple toilet paper. The fluffy stuff takes longer to break down. Never flush grease down the toilet. These are the keys to maintaining the septic system. If your drainage field is properly sized for the usage and the soil condition, it should never need to be touched. If the tank is not properly maintained, you're going to face putting in a new drainage field.

My septic tank is 25 years old, and I've lived in the house for 21 years. I've never had a problem. I think the original owner had it properly sized, and with a good drainage field. Plus I agree with Steve about using simple toilet paper and not putting grease or the likes in the system. But in my case, I use Rid-X religiously......once a month. And I've never tried any other brand.
