Thomas Jefferson said that the average great civilization usually lasted about 200 years. I do not count the Roman Civilization that lasted many more decades because they believed in slavery much longer than even the US. I don't find that as disheartening as probably most of you do. At least he is questioning conventional thought. I used to deliberately do that in my science classes in junior high. I would challenge some completely unquestioned assumption and would ask for proof.
