Is this just one video or all videos? AVI or MPG, etc. are just containers for data. Just because the file is taged as AVI does not mean that it is formatted in true AVI format, there are several modified versions.

If not already on your machine I would recommend installing Windows Essential Codec Pack:
http://www.mediacodec.org/

Can't remember if it tries to install any tool bars or other crud, just choose advanced or custom install and watch for anything. I WOULD allow it to install Media Player Classic Home Cinema as it is a great player. It may or may not notify you of some broken codecs already on your system. Allow it to fix or remove, there are usually two.

Hi Jay, I installed that Windows Essentials Codec Pack a while ago. I am fairly sure that these are true AVI files as several of them I created myself using Power Director. It is only AVI files that cause the error.

Got a new message on my alert flag today as well about FFMPEG......never heard of it till now.
This is a pic of the message I got today:

FFmpeg is a video render. If it has become corrupt that would explain your issue. I would uninstall Windows Essential Codec Pack and re-install with the newest version via the link I gave.

It's still not working after the uninstall and re-install. This was working ok last week so I am thinking of maybe trying "system restore" unless there is something else I can try

Yes, go for the system restore.
