Pretty much the same from Speakeasy. I'm surprised!

This is the results I get to the nearest test server in UK. Speed stays about the same if one in Europe is used but the ping time increases to about 35ms.

Nope, I wouldn't complain either, Steve. Heck, I'm not complaining with 50.

Ok, was having fun with the Comcast monster and my Apple router. I now have the Apple plugged into the Comcast and the two pcs plugged into the Apple. In other words, the ONLY thing now plugged into the Comcast is the Apple, nothing else.
Question: when I go into the Comcast settings I now see the Apple as you would expect but I am still able to see both pcs. I was under the impression, perhaps mistaken, that I should now only be able to see the Apple and nothing else. Is this correct or what?
By the way, the Apple is able to handle the speed of the new Comcast, no difference on speed test.
Thanks, Acadia

Each device now has a different IP address. The apple controls your internal network and then there's the connection between the Apple and the modem. You can still go into the settings for either device but you have to know the appropriate address. It's likely to be the default setting that you should be able to look up in the router's table. Once you got it make it a favorite in your browser and you won't have to think about those numbers again until it all goes belly up.
My router is 192.168.1.1 and the modem is 192.168.254.254.

I was looking at the Apple router's settings. When I connected these two things, the Apple "bridged" which I believe turns off its NAT. So evidently, if I am reading this stuff correctly, I now only have the NAT of the Comcast. I guess this does not bother me so much but the issue now is, I really do not need the Apple router at all. One nice thing about it though is, it makes it easier for me to unplug everything with an incoming electrical storm so I just might keep my Apple even though I am not getting double NAT protection.

You can bridge the modem and disable the NAT feature but it's not required. When you bridge that allows the router to have a public IP address so that you can use remote tools without an IP address conflict. I don't believe you use such remote tools [VPN, P2P, internet phones and so on] and you could be double NATed if you wanted. Regardless of how you setup a router is always a handy thing to have in place. Is double NAT something great? It does offer an extra layer but can cause complexity. There's lots of hairy stories about it for sure. Mine works fine but once in a blue moon I have to figure out port forwarding again because I can't get through from the outside. This might help a little but once you get into networking it can take a while to get it: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... ridge-mode

Thanks for all of the info, Manny, I really appreciate it. I think I am going to keep things as they are, don't want to throw more complexity at this aching, aging brain. Complex enough for me to have a router plugged into a Gateway but, as I stated above somewhere, I like the fact that it is now simpler to unplug everything with storms. As for my security, still testing completely stealth at grc.com and of course, if someone ever got past my hardware NAT, they would still have my software firewall to contend with. Acadia

I'm glad that I have Optimum, well now Charter and not Comcast. Then again other outfits will probably follow this lead.
I AM glad to see that this modem feature is automatically disabled (if I read right) if you are using a separate wireless router after the modem. Like I've often said, a router is a necessary security level even if there is only one system involved.

Sounds very much like over this side the pond and BTs Fon network. You have to actually agree to it though if you want your router to be used as part of the network.

Since this is a thread about AV's Emsisoft has announced release of EAM 9.0 It is really smooth and light. I've been running for a while as a beta. For 9 days they are offering a special. Instead of 39.95 a year it is 9.99 for the 1st year.

Given Emsisoft's good reputation, that offer looks too good to miss out on. I almost went ahead. The current configuration I'm using consists of Windows Defender (Windows 8.1.1) MBAM Pro 2 (running realtime) and Sandboxie. It seems MBAM performs some similar functions to EAM, so maybe there's not too much reason to change one for the other? Are they comparable products?
