For years I have used a little free search engine called Everything, which is a great tool for finding files almost instantly. I wanted to put it on my wife's computer so I downloaded it from what looked like a legitimate source. Not so -- an unwanted program came with it, which I promptly uninstalled. I did not install Everything from the file I just downloaded, but went back to get it from CNET and installed it from that file.

Today, my wife received the attached pop-up window that won't go away, indicating to me that some bad stuff remains on her computer. Clicking "No" only causes the "Warning" to pop up in the middle of the screen again, and I can't find anything in Task Manager for that window. I opened Programs and Features and found four more unwanted programs that were installed yesterday and I uninstalled each. So far, the "Warning" has not popped up again.

My question is: Was this a legitimate Windows warning, or malware that wanted us to click on "Yes?"

Use System Restore to go back to before you installed from the unsavory source.
Or,
Try adwcleaner: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
Try Malwarebytes Antimalware (free version, do not install the trial or Pro version) - http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
Try Junkware Removal Tool - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/downloa ... oval-tool/
Try SuperAntispyware Free version - http://superantispyware.com/download.html

To me the security warning from Microsoft looks very legit, it was warning you of something that MS did not recognize. Take Steve's advice. In addition, if you have a backup program that you have used recently, if those other steps do not work, you might want to consider restoring one of those backups. Good luck.

Thanks, Steve and Acadia. Since I uninstalled all the bogus programs, the warning has not reappeared, but I will run some of Steve's suggestions just to be sure.
