In reading the previous ongoing topic about Malwarebytes, etc....... I always thought Defender was just antimalware, not antivirus. I have, for the last five years, with Windows 7, downloaded and installed all the Windows weekly updates for Defender. Also, for those 5 years, I have NOD32 on board. I have Defender set to do a scan everyday at 2 a.m. but this never happens because the computer is never turned on at that time. The log says the last scan Defender did was in 2013. Would you conclude that Defender is not turned on? and that's why there's no conflict with NOD32 |

Can't say for sure but it is quite possible that NOD32 turned off Defender when installed but I doubt that there would be a conflict in any case. In Windows 7 Defender is strictly anti-malware, Security Essentials would be the Microsoft anti-virus for Windows 7. Defender did not become anti-virus until Windows 8. |

If you go into the Action Center and open up the Security section you will see where it says View installed Antispyware Programs. Click the link and it will tell which ones are on or off. |

"Spyware and unwanted software protection: Windows Defender and ESET NOD32 Anti Virus 8.0 both report that they are turned on. To repeat and confirm what Jay stated: in Windows 7, Defender is anti-Malware (already installed if I remember correctly, I turned it off long ago), Security Essentials is the anti-Virus that you must download and install. Not recommended to have two anti-vir running but it can be done. Yes, if may slow your system down but not too much, if at all, with today's modern processors. When I played around with various anti-vir in the old days, I could sometimes get two to work together but it was rare, and I definitely do NOT recommend it. Acadia |
