This looks like it should be an easy task, starting with clicking on the start button in the lower left corner but when I click there, a thing called "Cortana" opens displaying a big black box which says "tap here" to make sure Cortana can hear you. The apps behind that big black box are all blocked so I cannot access anything behind it. Help !!!

To be honest I don't have an answer that would also leave Cortana fully enabled other than that you go through the hoops to set it up.

BTW, Cortana is the old Start Button search box on some serious steroids. Personally I don't care for Cortana and have it hidden. On my main system I have it set so that I see nothing of Cortana. In fact, if I click Start, I don't even have a search box. Still, if I start typing, it switches to search mode.

Right click on your taskbar in an empty area. Hover over Cortana and then select 'Hidden'. Now try out your Start Menu. Sorry that I can't be more absolute on the help but it has been so long since I initially set up Windows 10 I can't totally remember specifics. I hope that this helps.

Oh, with the Cortana stuff that comes up when you click on Start is there an option at the bottom to continue or not now? If so clicking on 'not now', or however it is stated, may close the Cortana dialog. Going from old memory I can't say that what I've typed is all fact but it is one of those things that 'feels right'.

I think that your start button (the windows flag) is hidden off screen. It sits to the left of the Cortana icon, which is a circle.

Does your keyboard have a Windows button? Push that. it will open your start screen/menu.

Steve, I think you are absolutely correct...that happened on a friend's laptop recently. But it came back after he Pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and got to the Power Button/Shut Down that way. I've never lost my Start button. If I get too many icons on the task bar, they begin to stack up to the left of Links, but the Start button never disappears.

Hi Steve......I messed with this for about an hour last night. Pushing that button you have marked as "start" changes the cortana icon to the large black box I mentioned. There are many other apps showing to the right but absolutely nothing works when I click on them. I was able to click on the task bar and bring up the option to "hide Cortana" which I checked but it did not hide it. Being very frustrated, I decided to do a manual shut down and go to bed.

I think the OS is totally messed up because when I turned it on this morning, a black screen opened and files were scrolling so fast I could barely make out what was going on but I did manage to see the words files and deleting, something around 476,000 files must have fled the scene ending with install disc and boot from CD. It took about 10 minutes for all that to go down so now I guess it's broken.

This is all very odd because I never use 10, only turn it on once in a while for updates. I do have the Windows 10 CD though so that will be my next new adventure into the unknown. What was it Arnold Schwartznager used to say all the time, "I'LL BE BACK'.

Not the button on the screen -- we know that in your case, it ends up triggering Cortana. What I suggest is clicking the keyboard Windows logo key, which should trigger the start menu.
Alternatively, you can use Ctrl-Alt-Del -- the 3 keys pressed together and you should see the power/shut down icon in your lower right corner to click and proceed to reboot/shut down.

Edit - I need to read the entire message before replying. Yes, I see that when you started the machine today things got totally out of hand. What is the current condition of the PC?

First, second and third reaction to the last post by Allyson is that the system was infected and she has lost, at least, close to 500,000 files. Mayhaps I'm just reading things wrong.

Jay, I am thinking the same thing, although whether files were really lost is unknown, could have just been a malware running that ran a script that shows files being deleted but nothing really gone.

Hi Jay......I put the cd in the drive and booted from that. It did lots of booting and rebooting and checking disk for errors. Talked about repairs....also if I wanted to save old files. I chose that and in about 20 minutes it booted up with no cortana showing and everything seemed to work ok. The only thing I had to do was set the time as it was off and hour and 3 minutes. It also said the system was "protected" so is that something that comes along with Windows 10? Also would like to know if there is a good link to a site that will tell me how to get started using 10.

The message about being protected means that Windows Defender was enabled and all security checks passed.

There are many, many tutorials and guides for Windows 10. Here is one site that has many: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/
