My sister is visiting with her 2-year old HP Pavilion laptop. It suddenly started exhibiting strange behavior, as follows:
- It powers up ok
- It accepts her password ok
- The Windows 10 desktop showing all her selected icons appears ok
- But then the desktop starts flashing and the mouse shows a blinking cursor
- The only thing I can do at that point is to use the keyboard to invoke Task Manager
- Task Manager appears with the desktop still flashing behind it

I'm at a loss as to where to go from here, so any/all help would be appreciated.

Edit: I might mention that her laptop was working fine until she plugged it in because of low battery indication.

Later Edit: I did a restore and her laptop is now working properly.

Glad to read that a restore resolved it. Unfortunately, the cause of the problem is a mystery, but sometimes the "hit it with a hammer" approach is the best one.

To be honest I was going to suggest that it could be a failing video card but the successful restore rules that out. With the restore doing it I would now think it was a corrupted video driver that the restore corrected.

Regardless, glad it's working now. :)

@Steve & Jay - thanks for the response. As of this morning, her computer is still working fine.

Short version of why my sister is here:
- I had a molar tooth extracted and the dentist gave me an antibiotic and some ibuprofen
- turns out the ibuprofen reacted badly with other meds and caused my kidneys to malfunction
- this weaken me both physically and mentally and caused me to take several falls within my house (nothing broken)
- so my sister came from Georgia to see me to the hospital, where I stayed for 3 days
- I am now home under home health care, using a walker
- I hope to be fully recovered in a couple of more weeks, back to using my cane as I've done for 3 years

So when my sister's computer failed yesterday, I wasn't sure I yet had my wits about me to tackle the problem...that's why I bugged you guys, lol.

Thanks again...BB
