I had asked this a couple of years ago but I believe that thread was wiped out during the server move, so I am asking again. I know that System Restore under XP was incomplete. If you used SR to uninstall a software program, there were usually parts of the program still left on your system. SR in Win7 is more powerful using a different method to monitor changes. I have been trying to determine if SR in Win7 will COMPLETELY remove everything from a program install. I have been finding conflicting articles on the Internet, some say YES and some say No. What is the experience of users here with System Restore? Again, I am talking about program uninstalls on Win7 not on XP. Thanks, Acadia |

Sorry Acadia I've never used it, if I want to uninstall a program I go to Programs and Features in the Control Panel. So far, touch wood, I've never screwed my system up enough that I need to use System Restore to take it back to another time. I'm sure that you'll probably get a better answer from one of the others here, sorry that it's not me.

The answer is that it may do it. Sometimes it does uninstall a program completely but not always. SR was not designed to be an uninstaller so to uninstall a piece of software do as Joan suggests. |

I will use the program's uninstaller or Revo and then do a SR. |

I don't know of any case where System Restore will remove the files from your hard drive. That does not mean that it can't, just means that I have never heard of it having that ability. |

System Restore restores the registry to an earlier time, as well as system files. It does not touch data files under any cirumstances (data files that are in User Data folders anyway). What is less certain are the program files of 3rd party programs. These are neither system files, nor data files. My guess is that Microsoft monitors program files of some of its programs, like Office. Some programs put their files in odd places. I don't have a definitive answer on the programs files question. I have, on occasion, at a client's, been unable to do a system restore after uninstalling a program and removing its Program Files' folder, because the files were no longer there. |
