For the past hour, I've attempted to install a file I downloaded from Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/antivirus-removal-tool?form=1 to check for any remnants of a Defender halted virus attack yesterday and both times this Windows 8.1 laptop has restarted by itself with a message like this:
"An attempt was made to execute of no execute memory 918xxxx.sys". I didn't have time to write down the full # but if it's important, I can get it by attempting another install.

I did a Google search for this message https://www.google.com/#q=attempted+exe ... ute+memory but I'm not sure how to interpret. My latest windows update/install was yesterday if that helps.

Does anyone know what may have happened or what I can do to successfully install this Tool?

I would not install the Kaspersky file. Obviously it has some sort of issue. Do a full scan with Defender, do a full scan with Malwarebytes. Leave Kaspersky out of it. They are notorious for causing system problems. Probably not compatible with your OS.

Wow, thanks Patty!! I didn't know that about Kaspersky . And thanks for the reminder about Malwarebytes, our IT guy at work uses this and he swears by it too.
