Now that I have my Lenovo Laptop running fairly well, I keep getting a pop up from Microsoft to upgrade to Windows 10. Is there any way to stop that? Also, it has twice changed from the homepage I am using to their homepage and it is not me that is doing it.

Uninstall the following Update: KB3035583

When it reappears in the Updates just right click and hide it, you may also have to hide the "Get Windows 10" update that shows up as an optional item.

Also and I hate to say it, but if you don't turn off auto updating, you will still get stuck. Microsoft has become a major purveyor of unwanted software.

What I am now doing is the following:

1. Auto updates off.
2. All optional updates hide
3. Important updates that are non security updates hide
4 Security updates, I look at in detail one by one. If there is anything that smacks of "enhance user experience" they get hidden also.

These things sound like reasonable things to do. Can you post some instructions on how to hide it etc;

Pete, could you please explain?

I have two instances of Windows 7 installed and do not see any hints of unwanted software. Well, other than the Win 10 upgrade which I admit would be annoying if I did not know how to kill.

While I don't have Updates set at full Auto I do have it set to notify for Windows and other MS software. I have never had an unwanted software package even offered let alone installed. The only updates that I have hidden are the ones for upgrading to Windows 10, Skype and all the language packs.

Please wait until Pete replies to my query as I am not sure that he realizes that this is a Windows 7 discussion, not one dealing with Windows 10. If this is the case the advice MAY not be the same.

To hide an update in Windows 7:
Open Windows Update and let it check for updates.
When updates appear unselect the one you want to hide.
Position the mouse pointer on the text of the update and right click, you will get the context menu to pop open and you can select hide this update.

The one to update to Windows 10 is very persistent and may appear again even though hidden, just re-hide it.
I have it hidden several times on my Windows 7 machine.

Hi Jay

Yes, I know it's a win 7 discussion. That's all I run is Win 7. I don't want win 10 because of the auto updates situation. I've seen several blogs recommend small businesses stay away from 10 because of the auto update and auto reboot.

I've already killed the infamous update, but a lot of the updates, the brief description is enhance the user experience, but reading the full MS description, there sole purpose is to make it easier to transition to 10. I hide them.

So now I hide all the optional updates, and hide the important regular updates. But I looked at the detailed description of each security update. What really has folks on fire is one of the security updates was a kernel patch which is important, but it also had a "enhance user experience" update which was about updating to 10. Microsoft isn't winning friends doing that.

Finally I always wait at least two weeks after patch Tuesday before updating. That alone kept me from being nailed by the Outlook fiasco. That just showed pitiful quality control.

Pete

I get a window to pop open when I select this update, but there are no options to hide it, it just refers me to Microsoft which gives me info about Windows 10 so what now?

I am running Pro, and I do understand the difference that makes on win 10 updates. But the fact remains I can't control what updates i am served up, and in the past even on XP and 7 that has caused problems.

My question was more pointed to Allyson.

Also are you using an account that has Administrator privileges or a Standard User?

BEWARE. MS has rereleased the infamous KB3035583. It's becoming that the biggest threat of getting crap on my computer is Microsoft itself.

I ran XP for the last 3 years without patching, and I am getting awfully close on Win 7

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583 is the upgrade which has been modified again to push the Windows 10 upgrade.

The steps to remove the update (stopping the prompting) and block it from coming through again:

Hi Steve

Do they realize the ill will they are creating trying to force everyone to 10 against there will. People are just digging in harder. Heck I would upgrade in a heartbeat if they would just change the update policy back to what it was.

Interesting. I think I know why. Jay, I'm having trouble finding a function that gives a direct link to a post, like we used to have. Am I missing something?

Here's what it said, Allyson:
It's a new world. It's your choice - go with the flow or be left behind. That's no judgment on right, wrong, good, bad or ugly. I've got no dog in the fight either way. But don't presume Microsoft's demise if they don't do what you like. That's not going to happen.

How does one service a billion customers on hundreds, if not thousands, of different devices? And maintain a high degree of security? Not by letting the individual customer decide when and which updates to install. Most especially in these litigious times.

This is the correct link to Patty's reference.
viewtopic.php?p=11777#p11777

I will explain what happened as info for all if one were to want to reference a specific post. The option to reference a specific post is a bit obscure but is there. As an example I will go back to one of my posts in this thread. On all posts there is a little icon in the upper right that will make it the first post shown if clicked.
Attachment:

post link.jpg [ 34.1 KiB | Viewed 23800 times ]

Once clicked the selected post will be at the top of the page. Just copy the address from the address bar and paste to any post to direct to the specific post.

As an example...
viewtopic.php?p=11759#p11759

@ Patty: Not sure how you got the first offered link but it went to the Moderator's Control Panel (MCP).
