It has been taking hours, or longer, for GG and I to manually do the Windows Update on Win7. I did some searching on the Internet and picked up these two articles among many: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810http://www.computerworld.com/article/30 ... -slow.htmlI am searching for a new desktop system and got within a couple hours of switching to an Apple iMac, I even bought THREE books on how to do it. But, the backing up and security of Apple software slowed me down. Yes, some will say Apple is safer than Microsoft, and in my opinion most of them say that because iMac represents only 10% of the desktop users so hackers will not bother. That is a bunch of "stuff" in my opinion. iMacs need security too! But more importantly, in my opinion, there is the BACKUP question, yes even more important than security. All you regular members of the Haven know my opinion on the importance of BACKING UP. Yes, iMac has a built in backup program called Time Machine. Plus there are other programs out there for backing up. But upon my study none of them, not even Time Machine, gets remotely close to comparing to my favorite Windows programs. I would be waiting an hour or more to recover rather than a couple of minutes from my Windows programs. Ok, I have always stated that using a computer requires patience, but there is a little bit of hypocrisy in all of us. OK, enough belly-aching about Apple. BUT what is it with the MS tactics? One of the articles above, the author being correct or not, partially blames this upon MS trying to force us to Win10. Even if he is wrong, this updating stuff is becoming brutal, what is MS doing? As of last month we were both perfecly caught up with MS Updates, so why do I need to quit and give up after hours of waiting? As the one author above stated, Is it any wonder why MS is losing customers? I don't know about that, is MS actually losing people? But they came awfully close to losing me ... and I still have not ordered my new desktop system but I will probably play it safe and keep with what I know, Windows, even if bliss means ignorance. Hi Acadia
What you want it to download is KB3161608 from MS and install it.
My time to install Updates went from a couple hours to 5-7 minutes. Fixed 4 machines.

Thanks Peter. Looks like MS already updated that one to KB3172605 just yesterday. Can't try it yet, have to go help GG in the yard, one of the branches broke off of one of our 400 trees. Acadia

Hey Peter, thanks, that did the trick. Had a complete list of needed updates in only about two minutes. Acadia

Acadia, could you clarify what you did that worked? First you say that it looks like MS already updated the KB in question. Did you then go and download it also? Or did the update that you say occurred the day before fix your issue?

GG and I could not update at all, well, I repeatedly gave up after waiting hours. After Peter's post I went straight to MS and downloaded KB3172605. This was NOT thru the built-in Window7 Windows Updates, since that was not working, I went to MS website and downloaded it. Then I installed it. Magic, only took about two minutes on each system for us to get complete listed of needed updates. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... _windows_7While this appears to be for bluetooth, which neither GG or I even have, if you go to the older KB3161608, which KB3172605 replaces/updates, you will see that it also contains a fix for Windows Update Client. I never had the older KB on my system so all you need is the new one. Haven't got a clue why this is not working for chas but there was some sort of a mention about language packs interfering with it, not sure?? "Important: If you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall this update. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this update."Acadia

chasbox wrote: Ok. Problem solved. Excellent, chasbox. Yeah, I looked on my Updates History and sure enough, I had already installed KB3020369, which explains why everything worked for me immediately. Hope you're now getting the updates as fast as we are. Acadia

NO, do not wait until next patch day! Just run Window Updates now and see what happens. It should work perfectly even if you have no updates or a gazillion! Acadia

Update always worked. I hope this fixes the hours of waiting for updates to download and install and fix the problem with the CPU running very high while downloading updates. I just ran it and have an MSE update

Chas, you may have a different problem than what GG and I had. With us the Check for Updates was not working. If I was willing to wait hours, once the list arrived, then downloading and installing went just fine, it was that initial list that you first receive that took forever.
In your case I would check your View Update History to see if you have KB3102810 and KB3083710. If you are missing either one I would go to Microsoft and install them.

Patch day updates are out. Installing those kb fixes seem to work Checking for updates took less than 5 minutes not 5 hrs. like before Installing the new updates went pretty quick. There also was improvement in the cranking up of the CPU fan during Checking for and Installing of the updates. Whole process much better than before.
I'm happy
