I am a member of AngiesList and Facebook and have been unable to log in to either site recently. An AngiesList customer service person told me that I'd have to upgrade to Windows 7 or higher (which my computer is not capable of, being a small and inadequate older Dell) or use another browser (which I did, successfully). I just now had a similar problem w/my Facebook login.
My question is: are my only options to:
a) use non-IE browsers to access these websites; or
b) to get a new computer?
I know Vista is not great, but I thought Microsoft was still supporting it.

You could continue to use alternative browsers, but it really is probably time to get a new computer.

I imagine that you are using IE9 which I believe is the latest version that will run on Vista. The current version is IE11 which only runs on Win 7 and 8/8.1.

As Patty said it is probably time for a new system but not all people can get a new system when they should. As an off the wall thought, since your system is able to run Vista, it is quite possible that it could run Win 7 and possibly even 8.1 and end up running quicker than with Vista. If you want to consider this possibility here are some links.

Considering the cost of upgrading the OS, and any issues that may be brought along, and the fact that hardware doesn't last forever, and the cost of new machines, I think that a new computer is more cost effective anyway.

You may be right Patty. I tend to think in terms of building a system not buying one. Of course for many that is not a viable way of thinking. My natural thought process sees the purchase of the OS as the first step in buying components to build a new system. As I would never buy a pre-built desktop system this is a tough aspect for me to see and I often don't.

Cost effective is irrelevant, if you don't have the money. Strange thing is I can see a browser effecting log on, but the operating system. Hmm.

She can use the latest Firefox and that should tell the story.

The way that an OS would affect the log in is in just such a case as this. Running XP the newer versions of IE cannot be installed. If the sites are using HTML5 an older browser could have problems.

Another browser has been tried with success.

Ok, thanks everyone. As an interim solution, I'm probably going to switch to Firefox or Chrome as my default browser.
Does anyone have thoughts about the advisability of this?

As a personal opinion I'd say Fire Fox as I don't like Chrome. Others would say the opposite for the same reason.

Tastes differ so try both and go with the one you prefer.

First a disclaimer, I have a tendency to change browsers every 6-12 months, but my current favorite is Firefox. Also, it creams Chrome, for the time being, in the MS testing sites that test your browsers ability to "put together" web pages, frames-per-second, that type of thing.
