I'm putting this in Advanced as it is not something that most would want to do...

I have the desktop display of Dream Scenes that was included in Vista working fine in Windows 7 via a simple registry hack. Yes it is a resource hog to have running but this is on my desktop which is primarily a media system and it has the resources to spare; it has proven to be a zero factor as to performance. If you don't remember Vista's Dream Scenes it allows a video file to be used as the desktop wallpaper.

Since I want a 'clean screen' for the Dream Scenes I have moved everything to the task bar in one way or another and set the task bar to auto hide. The one item that I can't seem to move to the task bar is the Recycle Bin. Does anyone know if this can be done?

Here is my current desktop. I want to maintain the use of the Recycle Bin but would rather not have it on the desktop. As it is my media system the display is on a 42 inch HDTV. Even if I set the icon size to small it is still pretty obvious that it is there.

Right click desktop.
Personalize
Change desktop icons
uncheck all, including Recycle Bin

Does that work?

Oh, I can get rid of the icon easily.

What I want is to pin the Recycle Bin to the task bar.

Actually I just got it! I have no idea as to what made me think of this but it works fine. If I left click on the new task bar item it opens the Recycle Bin folder. If I right click I get the normal Recycle Bin context menu.

I DID find another solution involving creating a new shortcut on the desktop with the location stated as the location of the Recycle Bin but it did not do as I wanted. All it would do is to open the Recycle Bin folder. I wanted, and got with my solution, the normal right click contest menu.

1) Right Click on the Recycle Bin and select to create shortcut.

2) Right click on the task bar and select Properties.
a. Under the Toolbars tab select Links.
b. Apply and OK out.

3) Drag the Recycle Bin Shortcut to the Links toolbar.

4) Right click on the Links toolbar and remove anything other than the Recycle Bin.
a. Right click on Links and unselect 'Show Title'.
b. Right click on 'Recycle Bin - Shortcut' and rename to whatever you want. I always use 'Trash'.

5) Remove the Recycle Bin from the desktop.

Here is the result when static. Unfortunately you do not seem to be able to rename to nothing leaving just the icon. Regardless this works quite well and I am more than happy with the results.

Here is the context menu I get. Please note that the Recycle Bin is now effectively a tool bar on the task bar, there is no option to un-pin. To un-pin you would have to deselect the tool bar.

Oh, duh! That's what I get for replying so early in the morning! I wasn't reading that you were looking to pin it to the task bar, just that you wanted it gone. :-P

Your solution is quite good since it accomplishes what you set out to do. :-D
