We all know about my media system and my dedicated drives to hold media...

I have a 4TB drive dedicated to media, actually two of them if you consider my mirror backup.

What I want to know if the minimum desired free space applies if the drive is only for reading. I have the drives set up as two partitions. The first partition is 1.9TB. This partition is fully loaded; only 1.83GB remains free. Of course I could never do a defrag but none would be needed as the drive is strictly data to be read.

On a short test I have seen zero issues as to video playback yet I have to wonder.

I guess my actual question is if I need to worry about available free space on a drive that is only for reading.

It wouldn't seem so to me, Jay. There's no paging file on it (when did you last hear about a paging file?!). No defrag. I assume it doesn't use itself for temp files. I would probably leave 15% free - but I'm not really sure what for in those circumstances. Perhaps to move data if there became bad sectors. Do you scan the drive for anything? I don't see that requires space either. Just trying to think of all the things that could be done with a drive that might, for some strange reason, require space.

Security Essentials and MBAM Pro are both still able to do a deep san of the drive. I don't really see why I'd include it in a scan schedule but wanted to see...

Indexing and restore are both turned off for the drive. Basically it is like a super huge DVD and seems just happy as can be in that role.
