I have posted everything that this post will contain in other threads but doubt that I have done so with everything included in one place... So here goes...

First the concept that Windows 10 forces any and all updates is absolutely not true. Is it as easy to block Updates as it was in Windows 7 and earlier? No it is not but, with the proper tools, it is still pretty easy.

First let's change Windows Updates from automatic to just notify. There is an easy and hard way to do this... Actually 2 hard ways and one that is easy.

1) The 2 hard ways:
a. Use Group Policies if it is included in your version of Windows 10. To be safe create a Restore Point before doing this. Now open a 'Run Box' and enter gpedit.msc. Now navigate to 'Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update'. You should have the following dialog.

This seems to work and you will probably be able to experiment and do further fine tunning. Since I do not intend to go all the way through this process look at:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/make-wind ... ws-updates
if you want to waste time using this method.

b. Make the changes through the registry editor. I'm not even going to bother giving instructions. It is just not needed and why mess with the registry if not needed?

2) The easy way:
a. Download and install Winaero Tweaker.
http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.1836
There is some garbage downloads on the page so make sure of what you click! After installed just use this simple dialog. The tweaker just does it. Please note that it IS needed that you select to check for updates on the dialog brought up when selecting to just notify.

As to hiding unwanted Updates I will just give a link to the MS article that deals with this...

Jay, that was a very useful post........thanks. I knew about hiding unwanted driver updates and have used that for one of my older HP printers. But I did not know about the registry tweak provided by Winaero Tweaker. Perhaps you have mentioned it in other posts, but I must have missed these. And truth be told, I would probably never use something like Winaero Tweaker if you had not so strongly recommended it.

So now you have given me something else to think about and probably use. Even though my Win 10 update restarts always occur outside my specified 'active hours' period, on several occasions I have forgotten that a restart was forthcoming and I was surprised the next morning that my computer had restarted.

You are quite welcome BB. :)

Actually I've posted about the Winaero Tweaker probably half a dozen times. Saddly too many prefer to gripe about an issue rather than using a simple tool to remove the issue.

One just has to remember that there are no problems. There are just unfound solutions. It is a sad situatain, but true, that many would rather see the problem than the solution.

Chasbox, thanks for sharing that experience. I think I will wait until you/Jay resolve your issue before I try it.

When you select, in Winaero, to set Updates to notify you must go through one cycle of updates to finish setting it up. Yes, this will install any current updates.

After the initial run the Updates screen will still look the same but not operate the same. You will now see a list of available updates followed by a download button. Click download and it then downloads and installs everything in the list. If you wish to hide something with the MS tool you should do so before clicking Download. Next time any Update notices come through I'll post a screenshot.

It must be noted that this affects ALL Updates including Defender definitions. I also much say that I have only done this on Win 10 Pro and have no way to proof on the Home version.

Yes, if you mean the MS tool for hiding Updates, "WUshowhide".

All using Winaero Tweaker does is to set to notify instead of automatic. If you click on Download it will then install everything listed. If you want to hide an Update you would need to use the MS tool.

Here is the exact area of Winaero to look at.

When you click the 'Method 1' button you will be taken to Windows Updates. To finish the tweak you MUST click to check for Updates.

<edit>
Oh, you should re-start your system.

Your Updates should get announced in the Notifications as long as Notifications is not disabled. Click on the announcement and Windows Updates should open. Like I mentioned I have no way to proof this on Windows 10 Home...

BTW, here is a complete list of Winaero functions.

OK, a new definition update for Defender just came up so I can show what SHOULD be seen. Remember that I did say that ALL updates are now subject to notification including Defender definitions. If you have Action Center Notifications totally disabled I would check Defender daily to check for updates. I really have done nothing to the Action Center Notifications that I can remember and all that show are current news articles and Updates. To be honest I love it for news and it has become, pretty much, my news channel.

Here is the Action Center Notification that I have Updates available. Of course I have cropped most of the notification area.

When I click on the notification here is what I get. Do note that the dialog's text still shows that Updates are set to automatic but this is not actually the case as is pretty obvious.

As another note concerning Winaero and Updates is that there is also a setting to totally turn off hardware driver updates. Since one of the biggest complaints that I've heard concerning Updates is the forced driver installs this tool should also be a cure for that issue.

Like I've said I have no way to proof on Home but I have doubts. One of the ways to do this manually is through Group Policies which Home does not seem to have or at least does not have the full set. I believe that you would have to do it manually via the Registry as follows.

Run regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Create a new key under Windows key and set its name as WindowsUpdate. Next, create another key under it and name it AU.

Now under this path, in the right pane, create a new DWORD AUOptions:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

Set its value to 2. The following options are available
•2 – To notify for download and notify for install
•3 – To auto download and notify for install
•4 – To auto download and schedule the install
•5 – To allow local admin to choose setting

Exit REGEDIT and restart the computer.

I already have this

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Create a new key under Windows key and set its name as WindowsUpdate. Next, create another key under it and name it AU.

Are saying that you already have the full path including '\WindowsUpdate\AU' and the DWORD 'AUOptions' or just the main key ending with 'Windows'?

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows' should be there by default but the rest would need to be added.

And don't forget to re-start if you add.

I had the full path already there

Maybe I am reading it wrong, but in the Cnet article by Sean Hollister that chasbox cited in another post (the Win 10 Forced Update post), I thought it said that the policy fix didn't work anymore.

Specifically, here's what the article said: "In fact, Microsoft has been actively getting rid of ways to keep users from disabling automatic updates: in Windows 10 Pro and above, you used to be able to do that from the Group Policy tool. As of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, though, that option is gone."

@ Chas: Is the DWORD value AUOptions set to 2?

@ BB: I didn't manually try the Group Policy method but the settings do show. Since Chas has the Required Registry key it would seem that the tweaker uses the Registry method anyway as would be expected.

Seems I have it figured out as I just checked on my laptop. I'll bet dollars to donuts that, if you open Windows Updates and any are present, you will have the download button available even though you don't get a notification. This was the exact situation on my laptop. The difference is a setting I did on my desktop but not on the laptop.

The problem is that Windows Updates is not listed in the Control Panel and it seems that it needs to be for notifications to show. Winaero takes care of this per the following screenshot. A re-start is not required but I do so anyway.

If you are running Defender you should get a notice today or tomorrow at the latest.
