Will probably have a gazillion more questions the next several weeks as I learn Win10. Windows 7 had a feature, an icon, in the System Tray that when right-clicked gave you a list of your USB devices that could be ejected. When you clicked on the one that you wanted removed you would get a message, "Safe to remove". Where is that located on Win10, or is it no longer needed? Thanks yet again, Acadia

Heh, about 12 years ago or whenever, Patty and James Fisher (remember James) almost begged me to become a moderator, for security, at Patty's new forum. I DID NOT WANT TO but did not have the heart to tell them that I simply did not know that much about computers except for security but I gave in to the pressure. Securing your system has changed so much that I no longer feel expert enough to help even with that. Jay, please remove my "Moderator" status but please keep me as a member at Haven, after all, someone has to come in here from time to time and poke fun at you and your toys. Steve, again, where do I find this stuff? Thanks. Acadia

Acadia, I will do as you ask as to removing you from the moderator list but not until you ask again. Please remember that being a moderator is not about computer knowledge but, rather, about helping to keep the forums running properly. Think about it and, if you still want removed, I will do so.

Acadia, here is how you find the stuff that Steve showed:
- Left click on Windows Start - Left click on Settings cogwheel - Left click on Personalization - Left click on Task Bar - Scroll to bottom of screen and click on "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" - Then you will be at the screen that Steve shows

Jay, I don't think you should remove Acadia as Moderator until he learns how to use Windows 10.
At that point you can't remove him because we will need his Windows 10 expertise.
Either way, he stays............

Heh, bbarry, thanks, but I have no plans on going anywhere. It is just that I have not done any moderating in years, I don't even remember how.

BB (not Jay!) sent you to settings for the first picture -- at least one way to get there. The second image is the one I should have presented first. The Notification Area of the Taskbar will include some icons and some will only appear if you click the triangle to the left of the visible icons. The Safely Remove Hardware icon is the one that I suspect is supposed to be a thumb drive or maybe a USB plug. If you click that icon, you get the options to select a currently attached USB drive and choose to "eject" or remove the drive. The first image in the pair is the settings where you can choose to always have that icon appear in the notification area. I like to see all of my icons in there, so I never collapse the view to where I need to click that triangle. -steve

OK, I think I see what happened here but this would be a case of Win10 now doing things more complicated and not quite as cleanly as Win7. I found that USB icon. On my old Win7 system, if I clicked on it I got a complete list of everything connected to my pc thru USB and all I had to do is click on "Reject". Now when I click on that icon I only get a partial list, ONLY A COUPLE, rest are not listed. But above the two listed is "Open Devices and Printers". Then when I go there, I am given a screen showing all my devices (didn't realize that I had so many). If I opposite-click on one of them, one of the options given to me is "Remove Device". Is this what I am supposed to be doing or is there a simpler way? If this is it, in my opinion Microsoft made at least this one thing more complicated for seniors, opps, that now includes me. Acadia

Acadia It depends on what you are wanting to do. If you click the icon in the notification area, the connected USB drives are listed along with the option to Eject that drive -- which is the safely remove option. If you go to Devices and printers and remove the device, you are removing it completely and Windows will need to reload drivers when it is attached once again. -steve

Steve, I swear, this is NOT what I am seeing. I am NOT seeing a list of all my USB devices. Now I realize that I was actually only seeing one USB device, not two: Win10 was giving 2 different names for the same device, one of those names was greyed out. I only want the "Safely Reject" feature for my USB keys. I tested it yet again, plugged in a USB key, used it a bit, went to reject it, it is not listed except if I go to the "Open Devices and Printers" screen. Being a senior is finally catching up to me. Acadia, if you are not seeing all your USB devices listed, it is probably because the missing ones have their Policies settings for Quick Removal, which is the default for most USB devices. This means that you can safely remove the device without having to click on the taskbar icon.
To see what I mean, do this: - Click on Device Manager - Right click on the USB device in question, then click on Properties - On the Device Properties screen that appears, click on the Policies tab - Now observe whether the Quick Removal radio button is filled in
I forgot to add. If you click on the Better Performance radio button, you will then see your device listed when you click on the taskbar Safely Remove icon.

Hi, Acadia -- no, it isn't you, but most certainly Microsoft and Windows. In my experience, when I plug in a USB drive -- thumb or external disk, I see the drive when I right click the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon. I've not encountered a drive not appearing in that list. However, I *never* use that icon to eject the drive "safely" and simply wait a minute or two after having accessed the drive before pulling the plug.

Next question, the built-in Disk CleanUp. Not working for me. Works for everything except Windows Update Cleanup. I've tried it three times even with Windows Updates turned completely on. I recovered after each failure so I was always starting fresh when I retried.
This feature only took about 15-30 seconds on Win7, why is it now freezing about 3/4 way thru and just sitting there on Win10?
Thanks, more questions to come I'm sure, Acadia

Acadia, I'm not sure, but it might be because you have Storage Sense turned On. To check, click Start>Settings>System>Storage. Then scroll down past Local Storage until you see Storage Sense. If it is ON, then like it says at the bottom of the page, Windows will only clean up space when your PC is low on space. You might also want to read the paragraph on 'How we free up space'. You might want to also read here: https://www.howtogeek.com/266337/what-s ... n-windows/

Windows Update Cleanup is EXTREMELY slow, took it 13 minutes to clean 2.88 GB of stuff. I can clean a previous Windows Installation (25 GB of stuff) in about a minute on the same machine.
